Send us to the People's Summit

June 9-11 is the progressive leaders People's Summit in Chicago. (See: https://www.thepeoplessummit.org).

We, Sharon Abreu and Learner Limbach, are both planning to attend as a team to represent our island community and we are hoping to raise the funds to cover the costs of our trip.

The People’s Summit is a gathering of progressive leaders to learn, share, network, organize, strategize, strengthen and build the progressive movement. Participation is limited to people who are involved in political organizing and activism. There is an application process and we have both already been accepted and secured our tickets.

The Summit will be an intense but rewarding work experience. We hope to represent our community and come home energized with a lot to share from our experiences there. By both of us attending we can “divide and conquer,” as they say.

We are both very passionate about strengthening and building our progressive community locally and nationally. This is a good opportunity for us to connect with a wider network of progressive politicians and activists around the country, and to bring what we uniquely have to offer from our personal and community work on environmental, agriculture and sustainability issues, and in communication skills.

We both believe strongly that a progressive agenda is needed in our country now – that it’s time all Americans have clean air; safe drinking water; a sustainable, healthy food supply; guaranteed, sufficient and truly affordable health care; a decent education pre-K through college; living wage jobs that don’t compromise the health of people and the environment that supports our health; an end to perpetual "war"; and real representation, free from the influence of big money interests.

Our Background:

Sharon Abreu has been working for progressive values for many years, as an environmental educator since 1993, a climate change educator since 2000, as a union member and Trade Union delegate to the U.N. Commission on Sustainable Development from 1998-2007, as a Washington State delegate for Dennis Kucinich for President in 2004, and as a Democratic PCO (Precinct Committee Officer) working to make the Democratic Party more progressive, fair and trustworthy, and responsive to the needs of hard working Americans. Sharon has been performing her original one-woman show about climate change and energy, The Climate Monologues , since 2010. She is certified to teach a simple, transformative social-emotional skills practice called The Connection Practice , which can help people connect with others who hold opposing views like never before. She believes we need the skills to do this now more than ever.

Learner Limbach was inspired to get more involved in politics by Bernie Sanders' 2016 Presidential Primary run. After serving as a delegate at the State Convention, Learner was chosen as one of the Sanders campaign's 70 total representatives on the DNC Platform Committee. Learner has continued his political involvement since the election, serving in a number of capacities including: Democratic PCO for ‘Orcas Central’, Chair of the Agricultural Resources Committee for San Juan County (SJC), Democratic State Committeeman for SJC, Vice Chair of the state Ag and Rural Issues Caucus, founding board member and co-lead of Labor Relations for the new state Environment and Climate Caucus, and a founding steering committee member of Our Revolution SJC. Of course, all of this comes only after the more than full-time job as General Manager of the ever-growing Orcas Food Co-op. Learner is committed to building community and to continuing the political revolution locally, on a state level and nationally.

Below is a budget for the two of us to attend the Summit. We already have a hotel room booked for all three nights, which we plan to share. We might be able to get one or two more people to share the room, which would bring our costs down more. Lodging is pretty scarce and expensive, so we probably won’t have a problem finding at least one more person to share the room.

We believe we would get enough out of the experience to make it well worth attending and we deeply appreciate any and all support, We see this as an investment in the progressive future of our country and helping us to help the world now and for future generations!
