Josh Goyne is a bull rider living in Australia's Central Coast.  He's also an openly gay man and advocate for LGBT rights in rural Australia.  His frankness about his sexual orientation has painted a target on his back in the world of rodeo.  However, even after receiving death threats, he has been undeterred and has continued to cowboy up, saying "there's no chance in hell" he'll back down from competing.

Enter: The International Gay Rodeo Association (IGRA). Formed in 1985, IGRA holds a series of annual rodeos in the United States and Canada, culminating with the World Gay Rodeo Finals in October of every year.  When we heard Josh's story, we reached out and told  him that he should make the trip to our side of the globe and rodeo with us.  To our delight, he said, "Yeah, it's a dream of mine!"

Here's where you all come in:  Josh needs some travel funds to make a few trips to the US this year to compete in our rodeos.  His first trip will be to Dallas, TX at the end of March.  All funds raised will go toward his travel expenses including flights, hotel, and ground transportation.  Josh says that being able to rodeo in an open and affirming rodeo environment would mean the world to him.
(Aussies take note:  Contributions are in USD.)

Transparency statement:  This GoFundMe was created by Ryan Reed, IGRA competitor and public relations director.  Any funds raised will be administered and distributed to Josh by the IGRA treasurer, David Hill.

Last night, we stopped taking donations even though folks kept donating after the goal was reached (wow, you guys!). We would like to thank everyone who contributed. Josh will now be able to travel back and forth to the US for at least 3 rodeos and for the World Gay Rodeo Finals (fingers crossed that he qualifies!).

In the case that there are any funds leftover when the 2017 IGRA rodeo season ends, Josh has agreed to work with IGRA to choose an appropriate charity to whom we can donate those funds.

Finally, speaking of charities, Mr. Goyne is more than just a rough ridin' LGBT+ activist – he is also the founder of Stroke Support & Awareness Australia, which aims to raise awareness, fund stroke wards, and provide support for stroke victims and their families. Yee Haw! We reached our goal just a little while ago. Josh will now have the travel funds to make it to 3+ rodeos on the IGRA circuit this year. I want to thank Outsports, as well as Queerty and Huffington Post, for picking up Josh's story yesterday, which really helped draw attention to our effort. Josh is over the moon about all of the support that he's received and he's so excited to get to make the big trip over the pond for his first gay rodeo, which will be A Texas Tradition Rodeo in Denton, TX (March 31-April 2). If you're in the area, come on out to see him slide 'n' ride! He'll be competing on both Saturday and Sunday. We'll also be posting Facebook updates all weekend at https://www.facebook.com/IGRARodeo/. Josh will be bringing along a GoPro camera, so I'm sure you can expect some videos to pop up on his personal Facebook page as well.

Josh sends along the following message:
"Thank you all so much for the support. Flights are booked. Texas Gay Rodeo Association membership and rodeo registration are paid. It's my 19th birthday, too! I can't wait to meet the rodeo folks in Texas!"

He also excitedly sent along a screenshot that we IGRA contestants see when we register for rodeos. Here's to hoping that this is the just the first of many times that Josh will see the registration confirmation page! (Explanatory note: $50 deposit required upfront. Full amount for registered events must be paid at the in-person registration that occurs on Friday night before every rodeo.)

Thanks for standing up for yourself--and all of us. I've been doing that as a gay man since 1974 and have never regretted it.

Highly respect your courage in sticking up for yourself and the gay community. Remember to respect heterosexuals too who suffer from selfishly viewing their own sexuality as the only normal. Best to not strut on a pedestal for gays have their own prejudices too! Best of life to you. ...from an "old fat gay fart" <grin>.
