SECS & Illini Greens NoDAPL Trip

Donation protected
We are all students at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. We became friends through a student group called Students for Environmental Concerns (SECS), where we all hold positions on the executive board. SECS is the oldest and largest environmental group on campus. We focus on environmental activism, community outreach, and helping to raise awareness of sustainable lifestyles on campus and around the community.

When we heard about the protests happening at Standing Rock, we immediately felt the need to take action. At some point in all of our lives, we have been asked why we care about the environment. The answer is always simply because we have to. There is an overwhelming need in all of us to be stewards for the Earth. We must protect our Mother Earth and all of her resources. We must protect her lands, her air, her water. We must take action to keep our Earth alive. We strongly feel that travelling to Sacred Stone Camp at the Standing Rock Indian Reservation will allow us to take action in preventing anymore harm to the planet we call home.

Winter is coming. Living in central Illinois, we have experienced winters before, but nothing like the North Dakotan winter. We are raising money to buy proper camping gear, this includes a tent and sleeping bags that can withstand below zero degree temperatures, as well as solar/wind powered packs that can provide energy, for our time at Sacred Stone Camp. We will also be looking to buy blankets, heaters, and winter wear for those at the camp. Once our trip ends, we will be leaving all of our gear there.

While we would love to spend all of our time at there, we are full-time students. We will be travelling Standing Rock Indian Reservation, North Dakota, from November 18 to 21, so donations within the next two weeks would be immensely appreciated.

Being part of the millennial generation, we hear a lot about how "millennials are lazy," or "millennials don't care about anything". Travelling to Sacred Stone Camp and the protests will help us to take action and show that we care. We are all so passionate about preserving our environment and keeping our home and other's homes safe from climate change. We are so grateful for all of the support we have received. Because of you, we can protect the environment. We can save the world!
