School charity expedition to the Philippines

Donation protected
CUS in Dublin 2 is planning a charity trip to the Filipino city of Davao in June 2019. This is a long running project set up back in 2005, and has made a fantastic impact on the local area. I attended last year, and got an idea of the potential work we can do this June and July.  I have volunteered to raise money and take part in the project again. This was one of my most important life experiences last year, and I would be remiss to turn down my likely last opportunity to take part.
We the students have covered the costs of flights and accommodation for the two weeks, so 100% of the proceeds from funds raised will go to buying school supplies and refurbishing the living spaces of the local people.  I am attending fifth year in the school.

We will arrive in the southerly city of Davao. Much of the city is pleasant and the people are amazingly friendly, but we will be travelling every day to the Badjao, the district of the local Sea Gypsies. These people are some of the kindest and friendliest you will ever meet, but they are terribly marginalised and discriminated against outside their locality. The housing is extremely basic, there is no proper waste or plumbing system, and poverty is an unfortunate reality for so many families. On our trip we work with a school in the area attended by dozens of Badjao children. Getting to know them is a truly life changing experience and we do our best to teach them and give basic lessons, tell them about Ireland and entertain them with games and music.

In addition, we work with a primary school and a home for boys in the outer city. In the school we take the task of teaching very seriously, planning lessons and activities for the various classes across different subjects. We work through the full school day, and get a chance to really talk to the kids and understand better their lives, culture and families. It is as much a learning experience for us as them.  The boys' home is where most of the hard work takes place, as we clean and repaint the facility, and continue our work from last year, which included new fencing. We also get to work with and know the boys there aged up to thirteen, many of whom are orphaned or tracking down their parents. The funds themselves will be allocated towards materials for us to improve the quality and safety of the suspended pathways in the Badjao, school supplies and similar work in the boys home.

Our deadline for fundraising is Easter of this year, that's Saturday the 21st of April.  There is no donation amount too small to be appreciated, it all will make a difference. I am making efforts to raise money through a gaming tournament in the school and bag packing in shops. To anyone who is willing to give to this mission, I would greatly appreciate donations, or even sharing the project to friends, to let people know how far a small amount can go for kids across the world. Thank you all.
