ACRES Student Farm is a 1.8-acre vegetable farm entirely managed by students at the University of Wyoming. The farm’s main purpose is to serve as a hands-on learning resource where university students and community members can learn the ins and outs of local and sustainable food production. During the summer months, we grow fruits and vegetables to sell at the Downtown Laramie Farmers Market. We also have a growing Community Supported Agriculture program with approximately 20 members. We donate much of our excess produce to Feeding Laramie Valley, a local organization that promotes food equity, and the Laramie Soup Kitchen.
Sally is our tractor. She helps us to prepare our plots when the season starts and, most importantly, flips our compost piles year-round. We strive to use sustainable farming practices at ACRES and avoid using synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Because of this, the health of our soil and, consequently, the health of our plants directly depends on our ability to produce nutrient-rich compost. Each week we collect vegetable scraps and coffee grounds from local restaurants and from the dining facilities at the University of Wyoming. It is estimated that more than 50,000 gallons of “waste” is diverted from the Laramie landfill each year on account of our compost collection program. This “waste” is converted to black gold, compost. We have tractor Sally to thank for that. Without her we are unable to aerate our giant piles to ensure adequate decomposition.
Sally, a John Deere 950, is unfortunately in need of repairs. It will cost the farm $1,300 to repair her. For an organization that relies on volunteers and donations to remain operational, this is a heavy blow just as we are preparing for the start of our 10th season. Because the tractor has not been operational, we may need to buy some fertilizers and compost to supplement what we were able to produce ourselves. We are estimating the total will be $1,500 for repairs and supplemental compost. For this to happen, we need your help!
