Save the Family Farm!

Build a community farm with us.

Five humble acres. Three motivated people. One really big dream. We're a family farm on a mission. We started out farming the way many people have, but it quickly became a dream we would have to abandoned due to human allergies to grain (!) and financial obstacles we couldn't have foreseen. We were devastated. This was our dream - the simpler way we wanted to spend our whole lives.

The answer came in returning goats to low-input traits that can thrive on natural vegetation; it came in naturally restoring the land to the place where it can sustain us and the animals; it came in reviving community spirit and living locally; and it is now in coming together as we ask you to support this vision and save the family farm.

#Savethefamilyfarm! We're setting out to preserve and restore small farms across the state of Maine. Small farms are an endangered species.

The statistics speak volumes. Between 1935 and 2002, the United States lost roughly 4.7 million farms. Today, we see only about 2.2 million in existence.

We are losing, rapidly, a way of life, that was once the very backbone of this nation. And the problem does not strictly lie with the rise of agribusiness corporations. The costs of living, commercialization of livestock, technology, and the weakening of family bond all have come against the small farms of America. It is these root causes we seek to target.

We want to become an educational farm. A sustainable community center that will help people save their farms through the learning of sustainable methods. We want to teach sustainable gardening, ancient skills, foraging, living local, and much more that will help preserve the family farm.

We've learned some of the ways a small farm can sustain itself in this day and age. We want to share these things with you and together, save the family farms. Will you help us?

Here's the budget we're looking at to launch this project:
Goats to raise sustainably and share with other small farms (includes costs of fencing, required disease testing, forage and hay seeds, field regeneration, one winter of hay, and purchase of goats) - $10,800
Start-up costs for Lamplighter Farm's sustainable creamery (includes supplies needed for cheesemaking) - $2,200
General farm promotional material, sign, and outreach to other farms - $300

Just 13,300 will launch this project in full, beginning with the establishment of a first-of-its-kind sustainable goats' milk creamery and the establishment of a herd of goats that will be raised in the environment we set for sustainability. These simple things, we believe, will set the stage for small family farms everywhere to rise up again and be there for the next generations.

Build a community farm with us.

This is our passion. We want to take the "local" movement to the next level. We want to become an educational farm. Will you help us?

No gift is too small. Even if you are not able to contribute financially, you can bring this life through simply sharing the message with family and friends on social media. This may seem small, but it is vital to the success of this campaign. Thank you!
