Save the Burgy Market!

Support Hilltown Business! Save the Burgy Market!

Background:  As many of you know, Angie and Jean Duquette, who have owned the Williamsburg Market for nearly 30 years, are ready to retire. To date, they have been unable to find a buyer to continue the grocery store. A group of Hilltown residents, from Williamsburg and beyond, have come together to try to save it. We want to keep a viable grocery store in our community.

After a crowded and enthusiastic community meeting in May and a fiscal sponsorship commitment from the Hilltown CDC, we have begun to investigate the nitty-gritty of the next steps. For that, we need your help!

First Steps: The first steps that must be taken to save the Burgy Market are 1) to determine whether this would be a financially feasible business for our community to undertake. and 2) to explore whether there is local commitment to some form of co-op or community ownership.

To accomplish this, we are 1) creating a survey to determine the interest of residents, and 2) conducting a professional evaluation of the Williamsburg Market as a business and the building itself.

Our Ask: It will cost around $10,000 to gather this critical information. We have already received two generous contributions: $2,500 from the Massachusetts Growth Capital Corporation and $800 from the Hilltown CDC. We are asking community members to pitch in and help us raise the additional $7,000.

The funds we raise will be used for the following expenses:
1. A professional evaluation of the business.
2. A professional evaluation of the building and facilities.
3. Printing and mailing costs of the survey.

Next Steps: When the survey and feasibility study are complete, the Steering Committee will report back to the community with the findings and recommendations.

Tax-Deductible: The non-profit Hilltown CDC is the project’s fiscal sponsor, so all contributions will flow through that organization, and are 100% tax-deductible.
