Save Sidyma

My little Turkish village, Sidyma, in South Western Turkey is under threat. A well established marble company obtained the mining rights without conventional approval of all ministries. Sidyma, for those who have not yet had the opportunity of visiting, is a tiny village situated over an unexcavated archeological site. It is a unique and timeless testimony to Turkish village life.
Thousands of pine trees would be cut down, putting an end to local pine honey. Byzantine and Roman walls would come crumbling down and ancient roads bulldozed. The villagers and their ancient, gnarled olive trees would be choked with marble dust. Several kilometers of our Lycian Way, recognized as one of the ten best trekking routes in the world, would have to be diverted. History erased by greed.

As villagers, we swiftly moved into action and opened a court case to halt the destruction. I am a Canadian woman who made her home in Sidyma and I am asking for your help. We need to send a clear message to people in power that obliterating centuries of ancient treasures is unacceptable. This serene natural setting, a tapestry of Lycian, Hellenistic and Roman civilizations combined, deserves our immediate protection for generations to come. Whether you are an adventurous world trekker, or have ecology or history or rural life at heart, please add your name.

For those of you who want to help with the court fees and expenses, please make a donation to one of the accounts below; a fundraising account will be posted shortly allowing you contribute to our cause. Any amount will be received with great appreciation.

I started this petition because...

I truly value nature, history and Turkish culture. Because people’s lives will be seriously affected. Because the doves should be heard in Sidyma and not the trucks carrying marble blocks. Because I hope the elders still living there will spend their last years without marble dust in their lungs. I hope that young ones will want to experience life in the bosom of this ancient land surrounded by a community, not surrounded by marble crater walls. Sidyma healed my soul. I need to protect my healer.
