Save Our Tree Commemorative Fund

$5,080 of $20,000 goal

The Whitehall Area Chamber of Commerce is raising funds to pay for construction of a sign made from and displaying carvings from limbs salvaged from our community Christmas tree.  In 1928 several gentlemen searched the woods near Whitehall for a tree that would be planted permanently on Main Street.  Previous to that time, a tree was cut each year and disposed of after the holiday.  It was decided that planting a permanent tree was more practical so they began a search for the perfect tree.  This 15 year old Norway Spruce was located, dug out and transported to town by horses and sleigh.   After serving the community for 88 years, the tree was ordered cut down to accommodate highway improvements at the railroad crossing.  Residents and former residents fought to keep the tree without success.  In order to honor our ancestors that worked so hard to provide this tree for our enjoyment for so many years, carvings have been made that will be built into a welcome sign for our community.  The Scandinavian "Velkommen til Whitehall" will create part of a substantially constructed sign that will protect the carvings from the weather and support it from cracking or sagging for years to come.  It will be placed in Whitehall's Fredrickson Park for all to enjoy.  In order to complete this project, donations are needed for the construction of the sign and landscaping around it.  All funds raised will go toward the construction costs which we hope can begin in the Spring 2018.  The carvings preserve what could be salvaged from the tree so it continues to live on in our hearts.  Donations of any size will be much appreciated! The Save our Tree Group of supporters numbered in the hundreds when efforts were made to prevent the tree from being cut down.  Will you consider supporting this effort to preserve part of Whitehall's history?  For more information, go to our Facebook page at Save Our Tree - Whitehall - Public Group.  https://www.gofundme.com/save-our-tree-commemorative-fund?member=11374 .
If you have questions about the project, please message us on the Whitehall Area Chamber of Commerce Facebook page or email us at whitehallchamber@tcc.coop.     Donations can be made on this GoFundMe link and there are no fees charged except for the typical small credit card processing fee.  Donations can also be made at Royal Credit Union in Whitehall or mailed to the City of Whitehall, P O Box 155, Whitehall, WI 54773.  Please consider helping!

A group of Save Our Tree members met today to plan a fundraiser on Syttende Mai, May 17th, at the Whitehall Public Library. A Taste of Norway, in Whitehall, will offer rommegrot and lefse buss and a bake sale with a variety of Norwegian baking. The event is a fundraiser for the Fredrickson Park improvement project that includes the Velkommen til Whitehall sign made from wood carvings from our former Christmas tree on Main Street. Stop in and sample some Norwegian goodies!

Our project is getting more exciting by the day! Our group met today to work on plans for a grant application to improve Fredrickson Park. The project will include the new Welcome to Whitehall sign, a walking path throughout the park, lighting for the tree, sign and along the pathway, exercise stations and the addition of benches and tables! Should the Chamber receive the grant we are applying for, this project will be done this summer. It will be an awesome improvement for our whole community to enjoy. You can help by donating to this GoFundMe campaign or stop in at RCU in Whitehall to contribute. Checks can also be mailed to the City of Whitehall, P O Box 281, Whitehall 54773.
