The historic YWCA Chester, now home of the "YES Center", has stood for over 100 years; offering life- altering services to women, children and families of the Chester, Pennsylvania and the surrounding area.
Sadly, the 100+ year-old building has begun to show its age. Although the exterior appears seemingly unchanged, the inside tells another tale. The loss of critical funding and the dismantling of the organization's orginal executive body have unfortunately lead to
deferred building maintenance.
Over the past 5 years, programming efforts have continued under the direction of Mrs. Twyla Simpkins. Upon her retirement as a decorated CUSD high school English teacher, Mrs. Simpkins (aka Ms T) decided to roll up her sleeves and try to save a building and organization that had once been so critical to the lives of those it served. She assumed a volunteer position as the Chief Executive Operating Officer as well as any other necessary roles.
Personally funding all programming, building maintenance and repairs, Mrs. Simpkins, is now calling on the community to assist in saving the Y's ailing roof.
Estimated roof repairs exceed $15,000. However, this is only Phase 1 of a series of repairs and renovations. Additional, assistance will be required ovetime to help repair damage to the classrooms, computer lab and building sancutary and for the restoring of the buildings beloved indoor swimming pool.
Due to the much needed maintenance, programming for the YES Center has been suspended until the roof can be repaired and additonal renovations completed.
Therefore, we humbly ask for your help in saving a building that has saved the lives of so many.
