Save Carmi Trails

The Carmi Recreation Trails group is dedicated to the preservation of this area in its natural state. The Carmi Trails are 3.5km past the Ellis Creek Fire Interpretation parking lot, on the north side of Beaverdell Road. The 400-hectare area offers 18.1km of beginner/intermediate trails that the whole family can enjoy. The trails offer hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and in the winter snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. It is a trail system that our local community has enjoyed for 70 years.
BC Timber Sales is developing a plan to log this trail system starting in 2019. Logging an area that is used for intensive recreation is a contradiction. Of the 13 km of trails that is in the cut blocks, 67% will be turned into industrial logging roads and 40% of the area will be clear cut. BCTS has said that the area will not look the same once they are done. The trails will be opened to 12m - 15m widths, and clear-cut patches will be in the most pristine wooded areas, with trees almost 200 years old taken down. The wilderness experience will be lost if this area is logged. We are opposed to BCTS' plan to log this area and are working to have this stopped.
Donated funds will be used to:
- Put on Carmi Appreciation Days, where the entire family can celebrante and experience the trails
- Cover administrative costs (photocopying, pamphlets, signage, and web page).
- Cover travel costs for a possible trip to Victoria to see Minister of Forests Doug Donaldson.
- Other costs related to saving Carmi Trails from logging, as costs arise.
If we succeed, any money left over will go back into the trails for signage and maintenance.
If we fail and the area gets logged, we will donate remaining funds to a trail group.
