Goal Reached!
Ryan Guerrette  MARS HILL, ME
At 980 feet of vertical, Bigrock Mountain in Mars Hill, Maine is the tallest ski area in northern Maine and the Canadian Maritimes. The Maine Winter Sports Center has owned the mountain since 1999 and with Libra Foundation, has invested over $6 million in upgrades to the facility since then.

We also have a new business model that focuses on making skiing accessible to everyone. We are committed to keeping skiing affordable to the region.

The Maine Winter Sports Center announced this morning that it will step away from its support for Bigrock Mountain, as it did in Rumford with Black Mountain. The western Maine community was able to raise the money to keep Black Mountain open and we are looking to northern Maine and western New Brunswick to help us do the same with Bigrock Mountain.

Please give generously, knowing that your donations will be tax deductable. You should also know that in the event we don't reach our goal, your donation will be returned, but Bigrock is too important to too many people and failure is not an option.

Pass the word and let's make it happen.

I would like to take a minute a THANK everyone who donated to our online campaign. The skiing community showed how important Bigrock is the region. We reached our online goal of $30,000 last night. With that being said there is still a lot of work to do and money to raise. The goal is to raise $150,000 by mid-September to keep the ski area operational for the upcoming season and a total of $300,000 to help transition the ski area to a community based skiing model over the next 3 years.

Under the new operating model the ski area will be soliciting more volunteer help, implementing a new pricing structure that will be competitive with surrounding ski areas, and we will be working aggressively to reduce operating costs. The new operating model will also include at least two fundraising events per year and the addition of snow tubing in the 2014/2015 ski season.

FRIENDS OF BIGROCK ANNOUNCE MATCHING DONATIONS
With only ten days left to reach their goal of $30,000 on www.gofundme.com/save-BigrockMountain website, the Friends of Bigrock was thrilled to find out that two groups have stepped up with matching donations totaling $7,500. Thompson-Hamel, LLC of Presque Isle pledged $2,500, and an anonymous donor committed $5,000 to match dollar for dollar, up to the next $7,500, on the group's website. "The generosity of the people in the area continue to amaze us," said Bill Getman, General Manager of Bigrock Mountain, "having Thompson-Hamel, and the other group, step up the way they did, will allow us to surpass our goal in the next ten days." Getman added.
"Bigrock is a tremendous regional asset and it is our pleasure to assist in creating a sustainable community based model that will provide opportunities to our region for years to come," said Brian Hamel Managing Partner of Thompson-Hamel LLC. To date, The Friends of Bigrock has received commitments for over $80,000 to date, towards their total goal of $150,000. "Every day we find ourselves a little closer to reaching our fundraising goal, and developing a model that we think will keep Bigrock open for years to come. The thoughtfulness of these matching donations will have a huge impact on our fundraising." Said Getman. "Our fundraising continues to go well, and we are thankful to those that have already donated."
Donations can be made at the Bigrock fund raising website, for the next ten days, at www.gofundme.com/save-BigrockMountain . Thompson-Hamel LLC, and The Friends of Bigrock encourage you to join their journey.

I grew up skiing at Big Rock. I couldn't think of any place I would rather be during the winter and 50 years later nothing has changed. My kids all grew up on the mountain and are know taking there kids to Big Rock and teaching them to ski and how many other generations of families Aroostook county and New Brunswick have done the same.when you think of family recreation sking at Big Rock is it.Young or old you still see families ski together I personally can't imagine not having that any more. I had the privilege of coaching the CAHS ski team for 6 years and 3 of those years the ski team won State Championships and I believe it was because of dedication and GROWING up at BIG ROCK lets make sure we give the kids that same chance NOW is the time for us all to pull together and make sure we don't lose this home town treasure "Big Rock"
