Saunook Train Passenger Shelter Restoration

Donation protected

We are raising money to move and restore an important piece of the Saunook community's history. Earlier this year, we discovered the Saunook train passenger shelter still standing near its original location.  We believe it is more than 100 years old.  It served the Saunook community since sometime around the turn of the 20th century until about 1948 when passenger service ended on the Murphy Branch of what was then the Southern Railroad.  Passengers waiting for the steam engine and train were able to take shelter from the elements in this small building.  A flag could be raised to signal the engineer that a passenger was waiting to board.

The funds will be used for site preparation (grading, fill, gravel) and for materials and paint to restore the building.  Volunteer labor will be used as much as possible.

Until recently, no one has made an effort to collect and preserve the history of our small community. Now we have a Facebook page (search for "Saunook Stories" ) where we can share the stories of our ancestors.
