I am a long time Santa Cruz resident. I currently serve as the Chair of the Board of Directors of MHCAN (Mental Health Client Action Network) the only peer owned, peer staffed and peer operated provider of Behavioral Health services and support in Santa Cruz County and as Vice Chair of ACLU Santa Cruz County. Earlier this year, I was appointed to the Chief’s Advisory Committee for the City of Santa Cruz which advises the Chief on matters of policy and procedure.
While I firmly believe that public safety is a priority issue both in my home district and in the county, this election cycle is also an opportunity to raise the level of public debate on several keys issues:
Health Care in Santa Cruz County is 13th in the state. We can do better!
Funding for and access to behavioral health services and support in our county is woefully inadequate. We can do better!
Santa Cruz County Schools rank 252 out of nearly 1150 districts statewide. We can do better!
60% of County residents are renters and yet have little or no
rental protections or control. We can do better!
Our immigrant community is supported by county resolution but not by law. We can do better!
