Salt Cay Fund

$25,635 of $50,000 goal

Raised by 146 people in 17 months
Salt Cay, the smallest of the Turks & Caicos Islands (BWI) has been devastated by Hurricane Irma. The damage to homes and businesses will be extensive. The money raised will  help restore infrastructure - roads, docks, fresh water system, public buildings, electrical hook ups, etc. The Salt Cay Fund will be the recipient, and was created in 2008 (after Ike and Hannah) for this exact purpose. Since then we have distributed over $20,000 for these purposes.
We would like to start collecting funds immediately, but will have to wait to identify priorities. We will provide progress updates.
My name is Jim Tew; I have been a winter resident and property owner since 1983;  spending decisions are taken by a group of similar individuals, in consultation with the local Government representative and members of the Belonger community.

We are in the middle of Week 4, with $23,000 in collections so far. Food and water have been coming in from military, aid organizations and TCI Government. People are returning: 60 or so at the last count. Work crews are cleaning out houses and putting up tarps, and will be compensated for this effort. Winter residents will be paying separately for work on their own houses; the funds here will be prioritized to houses of Belongers and other residents for whom Salt Cay is the primary residence.

On a case by case basis, others who have incurred personal expenses on behalf of the island will be re-imbursed, to include items such as fuel, food, etc.

Specific requests for assistance should be directed to me via FaceBook Messenger. Each request will be reviewed and evaluated by a group of Belongers, winter residents and others (including DC Wilson) as appropriate. Please do not commit any of these funds independently. Distribution of funds will be controlled through a single source.

Many thanks, Jim Tew

$19,000 from 110 donors. I am very impressed.

Damage assessment is emerging. We are facing a worse situation than the aerial photos suggested.

It is not clear how much the TCI Govt will be able to help.

This makes our private efforts all the more critical.

Spoke today with Almaida Wilson, our District
Commissioner. We agreed that clean up and debris removal is highest priority; Candy and her crew have been on it for 3 days or more.

The Fund will pay for this effort, including Shyne and the loader.

$17,000 in the Fund and Maria on the way. The first distribution will likely go to the order of roofing materials being put together by Anne and Sonia, and will be designated specifically to Belongers who intend to return and need repairs asap. I can wire funds to Polie, if those facilities are still functioning.
