My Ride to Deliver Bikes in Africa

Donation protected
Hello! My name is Rory, and in July 2015 I quit my job at Apple, sold off all of my belongings, and began riding a bicycle alone across the United States. I loved it so much that after completing a circle around the country, I decided to just keep going. I've since biked more than 26,000 miles through 36 countries and am getting close to finishing my second continental tour, around Europe. After that ... well, that's why I'm here.

As part of my ride, I am raising money for World Bicycle Relief, a nonprofit charity that since 2005 has distributed more than 300,000 bicycles to people in developing countries to help them get to school, make a living, and receive medical care. So far, I've raised nearly $30,000, the amount needed to purchase about 200 bikes. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine raising so much, and it thrills me to know that so many people's lives have been forever changed all because of the efforts of my donors and me.

Now, though, I have the opportunity to do something really special, but to do it I need some help.

This October, World Bicycle Relief has invited me to join them in Africa to help deliver bicycles to some communities in Zambia. It's an opportunity I can't pass up, and to make things even more interesting, I've decided that after the event is over to hop on one of the charity's specially made Buffalo bikes and ride it all the way from Lusaka to Cape Town. I'll be raising awareness for the work as I go and sharing stories about all the communities I pass through so that others can take part in the experience.

It'll be unlike any adventure I've had before. I'm nervous about it, and there's a lot to prepare, including getting all of the necessary vaccinations and equipment. But first things first, I have to get there.

There are some costs associated with the World Bicycle Relief event that are beyond my normal budget, and so I'm looking for help with sponsoring me there. I'll be covering all of my usual trip-related expenses myself; I just need help raising the amount the charity is charging to participate.

I normally wouldn't think of asking for financial assistance like this; I'd much rather have any donation I receive go directly to my fundraising work. But if there's one thing I've learned from all my travels, it's that you can't get anywhere if you don't ask for help. So that's why I'm here: to ask for your help.

I have a separate fundraising page if you'd like to learn more about my work with World Bicycle Relief, and you can also follow my trip on Facebook or Strava. I'll be sharing more about my ride in Africa in the coming weeks, but in the meantime, thank you in advance for your help. Ever since my trip began I've been blown away by the kindness of people. It's the reason I continue to ride, and it's why I'm confident that with your help, I'll be able to join World Bicycle Relief in Africa and see the impact of their work on all those lives we change.
