Aaniin Nindinwemaganidog, Boozhoo, Hau Mitakuyapi, Hello All Of My Relatives,

Winter weather has come earlier than the season as usual in Minnesota and there still remains the Wall of Forgotten Natives. As the community waits for temporary housing to provide warmth and shelter to the elders, children, women and men that reside here, there are many needs that still need to be addressed. Most tents have been winterized with tarps but that still does not provide the warmth for their bodies and as I stopped by tonight, I felt compelled to try to bring together the greater community to help address some of these needs. Let's help warm their souls with the goodness of humanity.

ALL proceeds will go towards buying bulk firewood, hand warmers, blankets, and any other supplies that may help warm their bodies and souls and will be directly delivered to the camps People.

Just as winter is here, the holidays are right around the corner. This made me want to share the story of the original Thanksgiving as told by the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe to remind everyone what this season is truly about.

It began with a treaty between Massasoit of the Wampanoag tribe and John Carver, the Governor of the Plymouth Colony in 1621.  Around this time, Squanto  of the Patuxet tribe had taught the Pilgrims how to successfully harvest crop to survive the harsh winters. After their first successful harvest, the pilgrims set off canons and gunfire to celebrate.  Alarmed by these sounds, Massasoit gathered up some 90 warriors and showed up to the colony. After the settlers explained the celebration, the warriors decided to stay for a few days to verify what they had been told. During this time they went out to hunt and gather food, collecting deer, geese, ducks and fish. At the time, there were 90 warriors and only 23 survivors of the Plymouth Colony on the Mayflower.

As the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe's Historical Preservation Officer states, "In the true history of Thanksgiving, they were very vulnerable and we did protect them, not just support them, we protected them."

Let us protect those at the Wall and let them know that they are Not Forgotten.

Chi miigwech, Thank you very much, from the bottom of our hearts.
