Ride for Will

Donation protected
Back in July, one family’s life was turned completely upside-down. William, their little 3 year old son, was taken into hospital with a violent headache and following an emergency MRI scan it was confirmed that he had a brain tumour.

William was rushed to Leeds General Infirmary where he had an emergency operation to relieve the pressure that had built up on his brain, but this was only the start. Just 3 days later, Will underwent an 11 hour operation to remove as much of the tumour as possible. The doctors successfully managed to remove 90% of the tumour and the brave little superstar was back smiling within days, chatting and flirting with the nurses.

Just 3 weeks later William had to endure a further 10 hour operation after another MRI scan showed up more of the tumour.

Unfortunately, worse news was to come. The tumour is cancerous and it requires a form of radiotherapy treatment called Proton Beam Therapy. This treatment is not currently available in the UK so the family have had to travel to America for the therapy.

William is currently part way through a 6 week course of Proton Beam Therapy and appears to be responding well however, there is a very long road ahead.

As a parent, you want to protect your children from anything or anyone that will hurt them, so what this family are going through breaks our hearts.
It makes you wonder how life can be so cruel but this amazing family, who have gone through so much in the last few months, remain so positive and happy when most of us would just crumble. They are all a true inspiration.

So as group of friends and colleagues, we have decided that we are going to try, if possible, to make life a little easier for them.

We will be cycling between JZ Flowers' two UK sites in the hope that we can raise as much money as possible to help them with cost of living while they are in America. Hopefully, it will also allow them to make some wonderful memories for them all to cherish, despite the daily visits to the treatment centre. Any surplus funds will be donated to the organisations who have supported the family through this trying time including:

Ward 52 at Leeds General Infirmary
Eckersley House - The Sick Children's Trust
Macmillan Cancer Support
Candlelighters
Clic Sargent

The ride will take place between JZ Moulton, Lincolnshire and JZ Newport, East Yorkshire on Saturday 17th October – a total distance of 100 miles.
