LOOK FOR OPPORTUNITY IN A NEW LAND!
Since I've moved here I have been trying to sell my work and trying to get a teaching position, and working on getting some commissions, but I am new here, an outsider, and I'm unknown to the general public, so opportunity had been scarce, is not because I'm here on the Island although there is a 60% unemployment here, but the fact remains that no matter where I would have moved to, I would probably be in the same situation, actually there is support for the Arts, and the artists here are revered and respected, to me it jest a the matter of time, and I jest have to continue networking and exhibiting.
If you have been following my career via face book, you have seen that since my arrival in 2011 in that year I have created 12 paintings and I even volunteered to paint my first mural on the island an 8ft. by 28 ft. out door mural called "Past, Presents and Future of " Puerto Rico in Yuaco, see video go to:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzQ3hL2tM8Y this was a low-budget project painted on zinc panels we had a few students volunteers and the paints were donated by me and the community called El Cerro, I did it for the many friends I made in El Cerro and for the publicity, and it worked, the news of the mural got on the local radio station and on the local television news, and in a national newspaper El Nuevo Dia.

With the above accomplishment and a few more paintings that I painted in Cameto and in Santa Rita, San Juan and together with the ones I brought from Chicago I finally having enough work to began to exhibit. So far I have participated in three art exhibitions, one was a group show in The Art Room gallery in Hato Rey there I exhibit one painting, and another and another was in a small town near Caguas where I also exhibited one painting, and in the last exhibition we were fortunate to got reviewed, that exhibit was a joint project, I exhibited together with my friend the artist Juan Carlos Baez who is a graduate from the Art Institute of Chicago and has recently moved here to the island, this exhibit took place in one of San Juan's most popular Art Gallery Galeria Guatibiri in Santa Rita, Rio Pedars, and recently I have been ask to submit samples of my works and my resume to la Colección de las Artes at the University of Puerto Rico in Rio Pedars, and a more recent accomplishment was my registration at The Artist Registry of The Institute of Puerto Rican Art and Culture in old San Juan, and finally I am in the process of painting a mural with three other artist in Caguas this project is sponsored by the city of Caguas.

MY BIOGRAPHY
Born to Puerto Rican immigrant parents in 1949 in South Bronx, New York, Gamaliel Ramirez's family moved to Chicago in 1955. Struggling with an undiagnosed case of dyslexia, Ramirez didn't do well in school and was forced out of Peabody grammar school at the age of 16, which was when he decided to teach himself how to paint. He began his education at The Art Institute of Chicago, which he frequently visits to study the paintings of European masters and eventually he began to study the Latin American masters. Gamaliel Ramirez is one of the pioneers of Chicago-based Latino art, A founding member of El Taller which was one of the first Latino arts organization in the country, originally founded in 1970 to recognize, develop and promote or Latino art and culture and has exhibited paintings nationally and internationally. For over thirty five years, Gamaliel has worked in numerous communities throughout Chicago. His work has included the development of cultural arts programs such as, newsletters, festivals, and facilitating workshops on silk screen printing, drawing and painting and mural painting. He had designed numerous posters for festivals, writes poetry, and has served as a curator of art exhibitions. Through his work, he projects images of Puerto Rican and of other minorities in urban environment. Through his media, Gamaliel's subject matter explores the irony of his different worlds. His teams often combine urban landscapes with primitive figure or of Afro-centric nature, creating a cultural cosmetology that relates to us the roots of his Caribbean culture and heritage.

MY ARTIST STATEMENT
Like many Puerto Rican artists who were born and raised in the United States, European and North American influences were my first sources of inspiration. Searching for my past and the present, I began to explore the world of arts beyond the borders of my pervious influences. I started by exploring my own roots, which stems from three different continents, Africa, Europe and America. My exploration had led me through many paths that questioned and changed my beliefs and philosophy towards the arts. For the last 40 years I have been working and committed to the studies of the local and national contemporary art movements. These movements, the Rican, Chicano, Black, Women's and others, involve groups of master artists creating in all mediums and in a multicultural and gender environments. Presently, I am a master painter using this universal medium as a voice that enables me artistically, aesthetically and with integrity to express myself through my specific cultural experiences, realities and feelings. My goals are to continue contributing and to validate this post-modern avant-garde art movement.
