Julie Radford saving our planet one plant @ a time

Donation protected
With 83% of the land surfaces on the earth being modified and damaged by human activity, it is our responsibility to do our very best to maintain the biodiversity that remains.
In Central Victoria there are 31 species of orchid that are regionally and nationally rare and close to becoming extinct.

Together with local community groups I have dedicated the last 15 years of my life to protecting these species in the bush and now have expanded my capacity to also propagate these plants in laboratory conditions to reintroduce them back into the wild.

To date I have planted 21 species of endangered plants back into the wild, 7 of these were very rare orchid species.

I have built a self funded propagation facility in my basement to grow as many rare species of orchids as I can possibly achieve, the first year has been incredibly successful, with 14 species successfully germinating. Of these two are of the rarest plant species in the country, followed very closely by 10 very endangered species.

The success has been a great achievement but at the same time space has become an issue, I need to expand on the size of my nursery, I have in one season outgrown it and now need to purchase a larger one and a new autoclave to make the time it takes to clean equipment more efficient!

I have had already put a lot of money into the equipment required to do this wonderful thing and need some support now from caring people to make more nursery space and more efficient propagation for more endangered species.

The project I work on allows for the involvement of volunteers both in the laboratory and out in the bush planting the orchids back into the wild. I have an amazing support network of concerned environmental groups.

Orchids are complex species that require many hours of growing associated fungi and seed sowing before they can be ready to reintroduced back into the wild, sometimes it can take up to 4 years from seed collecting to reintroduction. This is time consuming and expensive.

I need help to stop these extinctions in my region of Central Victoria.
The following species are my priorities for intervention; The McIvor Spider Orchid Caladenia audasii, The Mandurang Spider Orchid Caladenia sp aff fragrantissima, The Yellow lip Spider orchid Caladenia xanthochila, The Large White Spider Orchid Caladenia venusta, The Candy Spider Orchid Caladenia versicolor, The Castlemaine Spider Orchid Caladenia clavescens, The Stuart Mill Spider Orchid Caladenia cretacea, The Brilliant Sun Orchid Thelymitra mackibinnii and the list goes on!!!!!

Some of these species are known from single regional populations and seriously need our help.
