Greetings!
Reed Academy is part of the Springfield Public Schools system in Springfield, Missouri. We are located in the north-west part of the city with a mostly urban population. Of those students, more than 80% qualify for the Free or Reduced Lunch Program.
Each school year we strive to offer our students the finest educational opportunities available. This year, the teachers of the sixth grade team are working to combine our curricula into a Project Based Learning unit which will include all of our sixth grade students and each content area. As a kickoff for this PBL unit, we have planned a field trip to Smallin Civil War Cave. The focus of our student lead unit is on the changing Earth. The cave field trip will offer our students a chance to observe some of the natural formations that Southwest Missouri is world famous for. Lead by professional docents, our students will be able to traverse a cave system with flowstones, weathering and erosion marks, stalactites, stalagmites, columns, fossils from an ancient inland sea, signs of human occupation both modern and ancient, and a myriad of the other natural wonders that exist right here in the Ozarks.
