Measles and Rubella Initiative

Donation protected
The Measles & Rubella Initiative is one of the world’s most successful partnerships in global health –helping to control the spread of measles and reduce deaths.

Launched in 2001 by the American Red Cross, United Nations Foundation, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF and World Health Organization, the Measles & Rubella Initiative first aimed to make a difference in Africa. Since then the American Red Cross and its Measles & Rubella Initiative partners have helped to vaccinate one billion children in more than 80 developing countries, making significant gains in the global effort to stop the disease.

The Measles & Rubella Initiative partners provide technical and financial support to governments and communities conducting mass vaccination campaigns, improving routine immunization services, and establishing effective disease surveillance.

The American Red Cross plays a pivotal role in vaccination campaigns. With support from the Red Cross, volunteers use mass media, rallies, door-to-door visits and educational entertainment to reach families who do not have access to routine health services, whether they live in distant villages or urban settlements. This personal outreach has increased participation in mass vaccination campaigns, leading to greater immunization coverage and warding off disease outbreaks.

The American Red Cross has provided technical and financial support to 12 African countries in measles and rubella vaccination campaigns.

With less than $1, you can vaccinate one child and support this effort. With help from your friends, classmates or coworkers, you can vaccinate an entire village.
