Help Huntington, WV stay green!

As many of you may know, changes to Cabell County, WV funding has created changes to how community members recycle.

Starting October 2017, community members will have to pay $75 a year to have a place to take their recyclables. While this is not ideal, it is currently our only option. Because of this change, many Cabell county community members, including myself, will have no means to recycle unless they pay this fee!

I have been a barista at a Starbucks in WV for two years. I was (and still am) appalled that the stores in our area, responsible for so much waste on a daily basis, make zero effort to recycle. After watching hundreds (thousands at this point) of pounds of perfectly recyclable materials go into our city square's garbage compactor, I realized something had to change. I tried speaking with a manager about the waste situation, but apparently it was not a priority it has been about a year and still no changes have been made. I decided that if no one was going to do something about our store's inexcusable amount of waste, I would take those materials to a recycling drop-off myself.  For several months, I took as many recyclable goods as would fit into my tiny two-door to the closest Kroger dropoff on my way home from work.

At first it was no big deal making these trips for my store because it was for a good cause, but now that recycling comes with a price--literally--I cannot afford to keep doing all the recycling on my own (I have never paid for my time or mileage to do any of the recycling for my store. I am a student at Marshall and barely make enough to support myself).

This is where I need your help!
Help me continue recycling for our local Starbucks in Huntington--as well as recycling materials from my own household-- until better arrangements can be made.

The goal is only $75, which will cover the recycling fee required by the Cabell County Waste Authority. Until that goal is reached, I will not be able to recycle for my household or my store.
