Rebuild Sredl/Coenen Family's Home

Donation protected
My name is Leah Sredl, I'm Kate Sredl's niece and I currently live in San Diego. I'm raising money to go towards rebuilding costs of my aunt's beloved home and towards the personal belongings that were lost during the Ventura Wildfires. My aunt is truly an extraordinary person, with the largest heart and any contributions will mean the world to us.

Kathy Sredl will be personally withdrawing everyone's generous contributions directly from the campaign. If you have any questions or would like to personally send a message to my aunt and her family, please tap the envelope icon located next to my name.

A Letter from My Family:

From soccer team pool parties, to holiday meals and celebrations with friends who had no place else to go, to long-term housing for grandparents on hospice or in transition, to a safe place for high school friends with families in turmoil, the home that Michael and Kate built together in the tight-knit community of Kamet Court was a hub of open hospitality since our family arrived there in 1993. This says nothing of the family birthdays, graduations, wedding celebrations, tri-tip dinners, and quiet weekends among the ins-and-outs of family life lived fully in that home as we girls did the largest part of our growing up there. When Michael passed away earlier this year (June 2017) after a long battle with cancer, he did so at home, in the place he loved, surrounded by the people he loved and who loved him.

In the wake of Michael’s death, and now less than six months later the complete and sudden material destruction and loss of our family home in the Thomas Fire, we are bewildered the instability and uncertainty our family has faced in 2017, but feel fortunate to have the love and support of many people who have reached out, from near and far, to offer support of all kinds. We honestly can’t thank you enough. To those who have already wished us well, or sent food, or even just let us cry with you, we are forever grateful.

Should you wish to support our family through this campaign, we plan to use the funds to rebuild – not just our lives, but our spirits. We will build a new house for Kate, and slowly fill it with the memories and togetherness that transforms it into a new home. Most likely both of these processes will take some time - for the structure to be rebuilt, we will need to clear the debris, draft blueprints, commission contractors, and walk through the insurance process at every step. While all of this unfolds, Kate will need a place to stay, and the essentials to help her continue working life (she’s a few years out from retirement). There are many decisions to be made, uncharted territory to traverse, and “regular” life to get back to in the meantime. Kate will be the beneficiary of these funds, and her daughters will work with her to determine how and on what they will be used. Honestly, we don’t fully know the road ahead, as it is completely new for us. We will keep you updated with the decisions we make, and how your funds enable us to rebuild and get back to, or create together, a “new normal.” Thank you again.

With love,

Kate, Alicia, Natalia, Teressa, and the Sredl/Coenen/Calder/Miller extended families.
