My name is Rasheed Shabazz and I'm raising money to support my freelance journalism for the Black community in Berkeley, California.
I’m a freelance photographer and writer based in the Bay Area. I’ve contributed to outlets like the San Francisco Bayview, Oakland Local, and produced news on KALX, and used to host The Black Hour radio show.
As a student at UC Berkeley, I received an inaugural AP-Google Fellowship to launch the website for Onyx Express –a then 18-year-old campus-based Black magazine. I documented campus events and issues, recruited and trained other students in photography, newswriting and social media. Last year, I began forging a partnership with the Post News Group , a Black newspaper company that publishes a Berkeley newspaper: The Berkeley Tri-City Post.
I became a regular contributor to the Post this past March, but the small publication lacks funds to compensate me on a regular basis. The Post has a small staff that primarily focuses on Oakland and does not have a reporter covering Black Berkeley, and thus relies on syndicated stories for much of its publication.
Your support will enable provide much-needed, original media coverage for Black people Berkeley, for Black-owned publications.
I will produce 25 feature stories, 10 news articles and 15 “Humans of New York” style portrait-profiles. These will be published in and distributed primarily by the Berkeley Tri-City Post, but will also be shared with other Black and alternative outlets, including Onyx Express (onyxexpress.org) and the San Francisco Bay View.
As a Black journalist and student of the Black Press, I believe in the importance of Black institutions. I want to tell stories focused racial justice and the agency and power of Black people.
Most media coverage of Black people in Berkeley focuses on controversy rarely is there attention to the positive works being done for and by Black people. All assistance is truly appreciated.
