Walk With Me - Empowerment & Resilience Programs

Donation protected
My intention is to raise funds towards Walk With Me which incorporates the delivery of empowerment and resilience programs with a specific focus on emotional intelligence and suicide prevention. These empowerment and resilience initiatives are provided so that vulnerable individuals and families can improve their personal capability and social capacity through enhanced skill development and improved emotional intelligence and self-awareness.

Walk With Me aims to support individuals, groups and communities to improve their lives through;

1.       Providing effective, strength-based and contextualised information and tools to support an empowered mindset
2.       Supporting personal development and capability to improve social and community engagement
3.       Assist in providing further insight and knowledge into pathways to appropriate resources and services
4.       Identify trends and statistical information, and assessment methods to continue to build on empowerment and resilience efforts

This will encompass delivery across rural and remote communities. Life can be challenging,  but it can be a lot harder away from the social infrastructures of higher populated communities, towns and cities. The over representation of Indigenous youth suicide rates alone clearly demonstrates a growing trend in recent years as this crisis continues, which also includes our farmers and families from all walks of life.

It’s time for action. Raising much needed funds is my contribution. Support me as I dedicate running of 2019kms in 2019 raising awareness towards improved social support of  the vulnerable in this country.

This will be done mostly throughout the Top End of the NT where I live and in my personal time away from full-time work and family responsibilities. All proceeds will go directly into grassroots delivery of empowerment and resilience programs where they will have the most direct positive impact in communities that need us the most.

Delivery is based on a range of statistics and trends, for example: crime rates, domestic violence and suicide, lack of employment opportunities and socioeconomic factors.

Lastly, a bit about me: Paul Walker is an advocate for fairness. A former business owner and freelance consultant towards social capacity building efforts of disadvantaged groups, his entrepreneurial ‘outside the box’ thinking serves him well in this space.

A Scottish descendant and Aboriginal man of the Waanyi people in the Gulf of Carpentaria, he is known and respected throughout Indigenous and broader Australian communities by his various programs and mentoring style delivery. This has enabled Paul to create the Walk With Me campaign as one of his many personal and voluntary contributions throughout his life.

A military veteran of exemplary service, Paul is a former soldier in the field of telecommunications intelligence with active duties throughout East Timor and Bougainville. As an electronic warfare operator attached to the 7th Signals Regiment, he served various specialised units such as the Special Air Service Regiment (SASR), 4 Battalion (Commando) Royal Australian Regiment, and 3 Parachute Battalion Group (PGB).

He went on to serve a short stint with the NSW Police’s Crimes Unit and the now known Australian Border Force. This comprised of a valuable decade of experience in the early stages of his professional work and laid the foundation of his work ethic, conduct and community driven approach.

Life wasn’t always captivating for Paul who had a burdensome upbringing, the effects of a low socioeconomic environment that impacted opportunity and social functionality across communities, family and as a young child. A seasoned ‘couch surfer’ in his teens, he was forced to adopt street-smarts to keep a roof over his head and food in his stomach. He learned to use various circumstances and abuses he suffered as motivation to living on and achieving some great personal pursuits to date. Paul has, as he puts it “overcome significant traumas in life to still be here today.”

Paul now lives and works in Katherine NT as a passionate Financial Counsellor operating throughout remote Aboriginal communities.
