Butter's story:

This is Butters, my little shih tzu whom I raised since he was a puppy. On Jan,1, 2016 he was attacked by an German shepherd at a local park where he almost lost his life. German Shepherd's nature is very protective and while the German Shepard was playing with his owner, Butters got too close and was attacked. The German Shepherd bit Butters so hard it literally popped one of his eye out. My brother who was there at the time immediately took Butters to an emergency pet hospital. My whole family arrived at the hospital and hopelessly waited for Butters for 6 hours as they operated on him. The vet put his eye back inside his eye socket hoping no nerves were damaged and he would still be able to see. The vet stitched his eyelid shut to let his eye heal. The vet said even though we made every effort to save his eye, there is only a 25% chance he will be able to see out of that eye again. With her experience, these type of situations the dog's eye almost always have to be removed. Butters got over 20 stitches that day. He had a punctured wound on the top of his head and on his neck. The vet said if the German shepherd had bitten butters two inches lower, he would of died. After waiting at the emergency vet hospital for 6 hours, we finally got to take butters home. We were charged $1200 that day for his emergency surgery. After a week or so, Butters stitches got lose and his eye got infected. We had to take him in for another emergency operation and restitch his eye. That cost us another $800 dollars. Each visit to the 24/7 emergency pet hospital cost us $450 dollars plus on top of whatever treatment and medication they prescribed him. If we make an appointment to see the vet is $250 dollars on top of whatever treatment and medication they prescribed him. After countless of vet visits and two surgeries later, it was clear that Butters did not only lose his eye sight but his eye will have to be removed because he wasn't able to close his eye on his own to lubricate it. With the devastation of seeing how much pain my baby was in, I had to do what was best for him, and that was removing his eye.

The cost of the eye surgery was $1400 not including the cost of the medication they are giving him to manage his pain. On February, 17, 2016 Butter's eye was removed. The minute we took him home he hasn't stop whimpering because of the pain. The vet surgeon had inserted a small bubble of morphine underneath Butter's skin for his body to absorb slowly within 4 days. The vet assured us that he should be feeling little to no pain within the next 4 days, and not even within one day we had to take Butters back to see them immediately because he won't eat or drink, which made it impossible to feed him his antibiotics. The vet gave Butters an antibiotic shot so we didn't have to worry about feeding him the antibiotics for two weeks. Two day has passed since the vet last saw Butters still whimpering because of pain and started discharging blood from his stitched up eye socket. The vet prescribed him Metacam and Tramadol as needed for extra pain relief. After we gave him those meds he immediately stop whimpering and also started drinking and eating again. However when the medication wears off he is whimpering again. This usually happens in the middle of the night. So I would give him his med and hold him until he falls asleep.

The owner of the German shepherd that did this to Butters refuses to take responsibility for any of Butter's medical bills. He did not believe his dog was the aggressor so he shouldn't be liable to help pay for Butter's vet bills because his dog was acting out of self defense.

Because of how unbelievable the owner of the German Shepard's attitude was in this whole situation, I had to paid for all Butter's vet bills on my own. As I was deciding how on earth Am I going to come up with all this money to pay for Butters vet bills, I shamelessly opened an gofundme account, and asked for help. I was hoping a couple of hundred dollars would be helpful, but never did I imagine the whole estimate amount was donated and more. We also got so much support on Instagram from dog lovers all over the world giving us advice and support on a daily basis. We were able to stay strong and positive going through this whole thing.

Right now all I want is to share Butter's story and raise awareness to all dog owners to be very careful when you take your baby to the park. You never know how another dog would act. Butter already lost an eye and if I didn't do everything In my power to spread awareness, the lost of his eye would of have no mean. Let Butter's lost be an warning to all dog owners to be more cautious.
