Hello.
My name is Gregory Gerard.
I grew up in a VERY Catholic family and had a wonderful, faith-filled childhood.
I also had a BIG secret.
I was a boy attracted to other boys.
I finally resolved this conflict after years and years (and years!) of searching & praying---untimately deciding NOT to end my loneliness in a very final, irreversible way. I came to realize that God celebrates love, in any form, in any union.
A book helped save my life (THE BEST LITTLE BOY IN THE WORLD, by Andrew Tobias). That story helped me feel much less alone in the world.
When I grew up, I wrote my own story (IN JUPITER'S SHADOW) to help others who might grappling with this issue from a faith perspective.
Recently, the US Catholic Conference of Bishops labeled a SCOTUS ruling for marriage equality 'a tragic error.'
Soon, worldwide Catholic church leaders are meeting (Oct 2015) to conclude a year of reflection on updating church policy related to the family.
It is decision time.
I believe that when misinformation or bigotry robs faithful gay kids of the hope of a committed, blessed relationship—to me, THAT is the tragic error.
I'd like to send my story to every single active bishop and cardinal in the United States (there are 277). So they can read one more TESTIMONY of what it's like to struggle with sexuality at a young age---often in secrecy and shame. So they can trickle one more experience UP the church leadership chain. So they can have one more VOICE helping them to understand the effect of the Oct decisions on others. So they can make informed, compassionate Catholic policy.
ESTIMATED GOAL DEADLINE: July 31, 2015
I hope to meet my goal by July 31 -- in time to get the books shipped in a timely manner and allow the reading to commence!
NOTE: If we exceed the $4,000 goal, I will use additional funds to send my book to US priests as well (well...at least some of them...there are approximately 38,000 active US priests---now THAT would be a GoFundMe campaign.)
