R2AK Stage One/ Race Support

Friends of the Sea!

I've applied for and been accepted to race Stage One of the 2017 Race to Alaska.
It is official! 

Stage One is the 42+ mile crossing of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, from Port Townsend, WA. to Victoria, BC (Vancouver Island).  Stage One is a long, wide crossing that passes through three international shipping lanes with some lofty open water exposure.  I will be making this crossing on a 14' Stand Up Paddle Board.

The R2AK is an entirely self-supported race complete with total self-navigation. I've got some race hardware/ navigation and safety expenses on this project that I need your generous help to secure. 

The orignal posted goal was $3k, but we were blessed with an off-line donor who put in $1k. So I can lower the amount we need here. We're half way there.

Once we get these few items knocked out, then we'll move on to the real work; raising money for some cancer striken families. This race effort is not about me. It's about serving others.

There you will see lots of photos and updates about the adventure ahead. Believe me - just the training for this event is going to reveal some pretty incredible experiences. The more you expose yourself to the sea, the more amazing encounters you will have. I'm betting that there will be some fascinating moments in the next 8 months leading up to the race. 

We have a deadline goal too. This needs to be wrapped up by November 13th. We need time over the winter to test and be confident with the saftey and navigation gear.  And yes, there is a story about the selection of that date. You can read about it on Instagram on 11/13.
