Our Medical Bills

This is a scary step for us to take... We've opened up about our experience losing our second son, Gabriel,  on June 18th, 2014. We discovered at just 11 weeks pregnant, during a routine ultrasound, that he had a fatal diagnosis. He would either miscarry at any time or live for only a few minutes if he survived labor and delivery.  We chose to carry him with us as long as we were given. He was a fighter, our Gabriel Paul. Our mighty boy was with us as I reached 6 months pregnant,  but I became severely ill and was hospitalized... it was the hardest goodbye...

Gabriel had Trisomy 13 - it occurs in 1 of every 16,000 newborns. You can read more here.

You are welcome to join our family blog, The Wight House, where much of our story is. I started writing immediately after I found out.

A few months later I took a nasty spill on the ice and hit my head on the cement and experienced a nasty concussion... The one month we didn't have insurance as we transitioned into both being full time self-employed... Mulitiple ER visits...

Jonnathan experienced some health scares and had to have CT Scans and testing... insurance didn't cover it all.

If we want to try to have another child, Jonnathan and I both have to be tested to see if we are carriers of Trisomy 13, it is $1000 per parent to test and is not covered by insurance. It's apalling to us that it is considered "elective" when the test result would essentially tell us that if we had a child if it would die or live.... we haven't had the tests yet. We also need to see if we are carriers, because if one of us is, then there is a chance that Jagger, our 3 1/2 year old may also carry the gene... If one of us is a carrier our offspring have a 50/50 chance of having Trisomy 13...

The bills have added up, and it's a mountain that we are struggling to climb. We make monthly payments, but between student loans, living on a tight budget, and being self-employed with new businesses, it's taking a toll. We are so blessed. We work extremely hard 60+ hours a week and are so grateful for our business growth. Ira + Lucy, a wedding design, coordination, and rental business is doing awesome and many great things are happening, but we are conservative with our business, not taking any loans or using any credit. There are so many things I wish we had, but we are trying to be patient and know that it's just not in the budget. We don't have a storefront, but instead use our garage and a storage unit to store everything. We pinch pennies everywhere. Wight House Creative is just getting started and will take time to grow.

We are taking a leap and pushing our pride to the side and asking for help... We have worried asking for help makes us look weak, or that we aren't good enough doing it on our own or that people will question just how good our businesses are, but then we realize what truly matters to us and that is authenticity and offering grace and blessing others. If we are struggling too much under the weight of these bills, then we can't focus on what we love so much, which our businesses allow us to pursue, which is giving back to our community and supporting others in purusing their dreams. We are trying hard not to give up. Jonnathan and I work into the night constantly purusing how to grow our businesses and get out from under these bills. We focus on our family time with our oldest son, Jagger. We share one car and rent the house we live in. p.s., You may be asking if we are struggling with bills how do I get my hair done or this or that. I trade. We trade services with other businesses.

This is especially hard for Jonnathan to suck up his pride. He is a do-it-on-is-own, doesn't-want-to-owe-anyone kinda guy, but he also realizes that sometimes it's okay to ask for help. Many of you over the last year have asked how you can help, but saying these words out loud is extremely difficult for us.

Thank you for taking time to read a little about our story.
