Knit Around the Clock 2016

Committed Knitters has been teaching knitting and crochet to incarcerated women in Cook County Jail and Haymarket Center for 9 years. Knitting is an extremely beneficial skill for these women, as it boosts self esteem, allows them to connect with loved ones by making them gifts, controls the anger or addiction issues so many of them struggle with, and fosters a community of safety within the environment of incarceration. After participating in one of our classes students have access to free classes and supplies through Yarnify in downtown Chicago so that they may continue their newfound skill without monetary concern. We also send a package with supplies and their completed projects to them upon their return home.

These classes rely on volunteers, donations, and our annual Knit Around the Clock fundraiser. As we allow students to keep their projects and access free materials after their release, we have a high material turnover rate and are constantly in need. What our fundraisers and donations don't cover comes from the pockets of our volunteers.

We are always looking to expand our program, but this year is especially important. We were recently relocated to a new division within Cook County Jail housing more women, and demand is high. Already months long, the wait to get into our class increases with every woman that applies. With additional funding we could buy the materials to expand from one classroom to two or more, and eventually even into the men's divisions.
