Purdue Tanzania May Study Abroad

Donation protected
For the past eight years, Purdue students have traveled to Tanzania for a month-long study abroad program in which they teach in rural schools, spend time working with children at a local orphanage, and engage in a wide range of service projects. The service aspects of the program have grown significantly over the years and now both current participants along with their friends and families as well as alumni of the program are involved in the projects. The need in Tanzania is great and the Purdue students coordinate with our Tanzanian partners to improve quality of life for the residents of Boma Village, students and teachers at the five schools in which we work, and Samaritan Village Orphanage.

Boma Village is a rural village near Tanga, Tanzania where we live during the program. The people in Boma treat us as members of their community and welcome us with open hearts. The needs in this community are great; this year we will be installing rain barrel reservoirs and filtration systems to help provide cleaner freshwater for the village, as well as purchasing a sewing machine, cloth/fabric, and medical supplies for the local clinic. Lastly, we will be providing the village with sporting equipment as such items are expensive and excess funds to buy them are hard to come by.

Boma Primary School, Manza Secondary School, Mwakambani Primary School, and Zingibari Primary and Secondary School generously host us during our visit each year. These schools are local, rural Tanzanian schools that are poorly resourced and struggle to provide a high quality education for their students.  This year, we plan to take sporting supplies and accessories for the students, including nets, jerseys, and jump ropes. In addition, we also plan on providing each of the over three thousand students with an exercise booklet and writing utensil.

Samaritan Village is an orphanage in Arusha, Tanzania. There are currently 36 children at the orphanage ranging in ages from 5 months old to 20 years old.  We plan to purchase  flip boards, cups, children’s plates, spoons, a hand-held mixer, kitchen towels, clothes, multi-vitamins and sports shoes. We plan to purchase as many of these items in Arusha as we can in order to support the Tanzanian economy. We also hope to purchase  shirts for the staff of the orphanage.

Fish Eagle Point is where will be living while in Tanzania. Steve Attwell has been in contact with our team and has requested a number of things that will help out the staff at Fish Eagle Point. He requested athletic shirts for the staff with their logo and tool belts for work days. Along with his requests, we would like to provide their staff with athletic sneakers, socks, and shorts. We also want to make sure that the women who work at the resort are taken care of, and we would like to donate  clothing for them as well.

Any help you can provide with these efforts will be greatly appreciated! The result will improve someone’s life in East Africa because of your generosity. We would like to collect donations by April 1 if possible. Thank you very much for your help!
