€220 of €1,500 goal

Raised by 6 people in 50 months
Dear all,
my name is Sarah, I´m studying the Master Program Natural Resource Management at Humboldt Universität zu Berlin.

From March to September 2015, I have planned a special mission: I am in León, a town in Nicaragua for doing volunteer work for the community and besides that working in a research team at UNAN (National Autonomous University of Nicaragua) and write my own project paper about alternative agricultural products (like asparagus) and biological cultivation methods.

Aim: The aim of my project is to support small-scale farmers and their families in the region of León, which rely on agriculture in making a living with the new agricultural products (e.g. for selling them on the markets) and in the long run prevent them from unintentional migration into cities or even out of the country. Furthermore, the daily diet of the people will be improved with new agricultural products.

If you are interested in my work, please don´t hesitate to contact me for further information, e.g. project proposal, etc.

Unfortunately the UNAN cannot pay me anything for my work. So for the realisation of my volunteer and study project in Nicaragua and everything that comes with that, I would highly appreciate any contribution you can make!  Please help me to help them :)

My expected expenses are:

-Flight: 800 €
- Accomodation: 200 €
- Study/research material: 200 €
- Food: 300 €

Togehter approx. 1500 €

1000 thanks in advance and warm wishes!
Sarah

Hallo zusammen,

Sarah

Hi everyone, my work is now done, about one year after I was in Nicaragua. Everything was working so well, and I did not only write a study project about it, but also my entire Master Thesis. We collected a lot of data, and it came up, that we can investigate about more and more aspects. It´s a very interesting and huge topic, that deserves a lot more research. But first valuable results are there, for example, that asparagus can definitely cultivated within these hot tropical climate conditions, that the organic fertiliser was producing as much asparagus as the chemical fertiliser, so no need at all for chemical fertilisers, and that there are external effects, like wind damages, that need to be further investigated. Also the acceptance of asparagus from local people and small-scale farmers need to be risen a lot. You see, a lot more things need to be done.
My next step is publishing my work and maybe contribute further to this research area. So some more funds are highly appreciated, in order to go on with this important work! :) Thanks a lot!

Now I am in Nicaragua since about 10 days and started working on the project. Many things are to do!
A normal day starts like that:
-8 a.m. arriving at UNAN Campo Agropecuario
-8.30 a.m. harvesting asparagus from the research fields
-9.30 weighting and measuring them in the laboratory and collecting the data in Excel
-storing the asparagus
- 10.30 - open end: secondary research (literature) reviews about current state of research/other methods in tropical countries (office/home work)
- once a week selling the stored asparagus for increasing awareness for that vegetable and checking usual market prices here

Later we are analysing the collected harvest data in order to make declarations about best fertilisation results (organic: bokashi or vermicompost). Soil samples will also be collected in frequent periods in order to test pH, water content, nutrients, etc.

Sarah

The preparations for my project in Nicaragua are in progress and at the mid of march, I am going to set off above the atlantic ocean. I´m pretty curious and excited about the things that await me in Nicaragua. I will upload the first photos of the project as soon as I´m in León.
So far I received my first donations. I want to thank all of you again who have donated already something for my study and volunteering project. Thanks a lot for your help! :) Those who want to donate something can still do it. I´m happy about every cent! :) Thank you and further updates are following up!
