addiction, death and suicide, a mother's nightmare

I am filming a video documentary on four women who have lost their children to the disease of addiction.  Some of these incredibly courageous women have lost two children to this disease. These children, once young and fervent, dynamically intelligent and creative, had great promise.  One of these precious souls committed suicide as a result of years of struggling with the disease.  Before losing their battles, they fought hard to bring the destruction to a halt.  They tried rehabs, detox, personal therapy and countless attempts at 12 step programs. Their determined and devoted mothers have a compelling story to tell.  They hope that in sharing these stories they can  help other mothers avoid the devastating consequences of addiction. 

To put things in perspective, in 1974, then president Richard Nixon declared a national emergency because we were losing 200 addicts a year to opioid overdoses.   Currently, we lose about 200 addicts every day. Politically, both conservatives and liberals pay little mind  to the opioid epidemic that is crippling our communities and killing our children.  

We can not, and should not,  lose any more.  Though some see addiction as a choice, what matters most is, choice or not, our children are dying.   Please help us raise our goal and get this film out to the public. 

As many of you know, I am a heroin addict in recovery for nearly 42 years and have dedicated those years doing service to addicts and their families.  Through giving back what was given to me so freely,  I have been able to stay clean and sober and alive.  My compassion and love for the addict and their families compels and motivates me to stay in the fight for their lives!
