Protect a local signature landscape  !

Thanks to hundreds of volunteers and contributors, we have a one-time chance to preserve an irreplaceable urban oasis! Many thanks to those who already gave! More is needed!

Funds from this campaign will support a strong community-based initiative to protect an exceptional place from irreparable destruction. This property is ecologically and culturally significant, overlooking one of the rarest wetlands on the Rio Grande River. It is the only place in New Mexico that we can experience the unparalleled views of Sandia Mountain range, miles of bosque cottonwoods, iconic wildlife, and critical habitat to species under the Endangered Species Act—all in one place.

New Mexicans protect the places they care about , and we care about this rare, scenic wetland bluff. Without intervention, a destructive high-density conventional housing development will demolish a unique adobe revival homestead that has served as an informal nature preserve and environmental sanctuary since the late 1950s. The development will impact a teeming wildlife corridor, a rare spring fed wetland on the Rio Grande, and migratory Sandhill Crane roosting habitat, perhaps irreparably. If built, we will lose this treasured overlook as a public amenity available to all.

WHY FUNDS NEEDED
Legal counsel required. Funds are used to pay for legal counsel to appeal the site plan (public record PR-2018-001402). A strong and well-organized cooperative effort of 17 neighborhood associations and individuals appealed a site plan that was approved by the City of Albuquerque Environmental Planning Commissioners on March 14, 2019.

Your contribution is important because this particular case is challenging and will take quite some time to sort through. You can be confident we have a strong case and a passionate attorney who believes we can win. But we need your financial support!

WHAT TO CONTRIBUTE
Give what you can! We receive $20 donations and $2000 donations. It all gets directly applied to the appeal and protecting this irreplaceable property. Please consider giving today!

Two Updates with Good News:
1) Hundreds turned out on June 29th for a KOB-4 News story about our community effort to protect the Poole Property adjacent to the Oxbow Wetland. Thank you to the committed individuals who demonstrated articulately and respectfully that this property is a real "crown jewel" in the City of Albuquerque and must be protected for the health of our most valuable asset, the Rio Grande River ecosystems. KOB news reporter Danielle Todesco will air the story in late July. She intends to broadcast before the City Council Appeal Hearing on August 5th (details below).

2) On June 13th, City Councilors voted 7-2, in our favor, to hear our appeal on August 5th @ 5PM. This means we have an opportunity to present our case to the councilors who could possibly reject the site plan and/or support any of our arguments. All of the appellants are committed to stopping this development and will take our appeal to District and State Courts -- as long as the funds are there to pay for legal support.

Your giving helps us pay for the legal expenses and so far, because of your steadfast commitment and vision, we have just barely covered legal costs. So, please keep giving because we have several upcoming legal sessions! Together, we are doing an amazing job. Please remain committed to each step of this challenge. We have hope for the outcome we desire.

Join us for the EPC appeal hearing on May 20, 2019, 9:00AM, 9th Floor One Civic Plaza. Your giving supports the legal counsel, who is confident that we can win this case. At the DRB appeal last March, he effectively argued our case, and we had a minor victory. Now it's time for the major EPC appeal hearing. The outcome is vital to all we have been fighting for over the last 9 months. Let's not underestimate the significance of this case. When you contribute to the legal costs, you give to protect this treasured asset to our community! It's irreplaceable! Please contribute today!
