Post-disaster support for children of Bududa

On October 11th in Bududa District, Eastern Uganda, days of heavy rain caused the Tsuume river to surge, sweeping away scores of homes, a preschool and trading centre. The official death toll is 68 but the true total is likely to be close to 200. Such high loss of life would be appalling for any community but it is especially terrible for the small, close-knit villages of Bududa.
As Treasurer of UK charity Trio Uganda, I know the area well and have many friends in the affected villages. Local families are now looking after children orphaned by the disaster. The teachers at Busiliwa Primary school, one of our partners, have taken in six children; others are now living with their extended families or unrelated members of the community.
Trio Uganda is assisting where it can but this emergency campaign is to raise additional funding to directly support the children who lost their families and homes. All donations will contribute to their ongoing needs, including school fees, clothing, health care and nutrition.
Meeting the needs of the children will directly support the families now caring for them. Bududa is an exceptionally impoverished area; most families live on less than £2 a day.
All donations will be distributed and recorded by David Kuloba, Director of Busiliwa Primary School. Your contribution, however modest, will make a real difference to a young life and help them recover from the trauma of losing their homes and loved ones.
