Thirty-three innocent apartment owners need your help!
We are seeking financial aid to assist us to fight for justice and legally hold our builder financially accountable for our defective and dangerous property. The situation we have been thrown into is turning out to be one of the greatest scandals we have ever seen in the building industry in Australia, and our building is a scary reflection of a web of systemic problems in the building industry as a whole including:
-Family relationships and vested interest, between builders, developers and the private surveyors who sign off on the property as safe to occupy.
- Illegal building products being substituted and used for financial gain and,
- Complete and utter disregard for the Building Code in Victoria and nationally, with the State Government, the VBA and local Councils, all washing their hands of any responsibility.
Barely five-years-old, our building is falling apart and putting us in grave danger every single day. The complex has building code violations and defects from its very core structures, all the way to through to its roofs. Wrapped in flammable and dangerous EPS (expanded polystyrene) cladding, we have been issued with Emergency Building Orders from our local Council, forcing us to rectify the cladding issues at our own cost (already totalling over $150,000) or be evicted from our homes, which we purchased in good faith.
The costs to rectify our entire complex, and return it to the compliant state it should have been in the first place to even be issued an Occupancy Permit legally by a surveyor, is looking to be millions of dollars. There have been suggestions that it should just be demolished, as the build is so bad. The legislation in the building industry is set up in such a way that, that pursing costly legal action, is the only way. The State Government and Council have made this abundantly clear to us
Five years ago I walked into a brand new apartment, with a sparkle in my eye, and a pep in my step and the great Australian dream of purchasing my first home right within my grasp. I didn't know I was about to make a terrible and soul destroying mistake. This unjust building system in Australia and a rogue builder has stolen the last five years of my life from me, I have spent countless days begging and pleading for anyone to help as a committee member on this Owners Corporation. I have suffered terrible mental health issues with debilitating stress and anxiety, missed out on spending quality time with my young family, stood in the street in my pyjamas while the faulty fire alarm system triggered a false alarm for the third time in the middle of the night and poured every last I have into something that is now worthless.
Other owners share similar stories, with retirees emptying their super, immigrant families looking to start a new life in Victoria, investors looking for financial freedom, and first home buyers like me, just dipping their toes into the world of property and start of life's journey.
None of us deserve the financial pain and stress this is causing us, please, in any way you can, we would love the support of our community to hold all liable parties to account, and maybe raise some awareness that this is not the Australian way, and sooner rather than later, someone will be killed in these dangerous buildings.
