Play It Safe Aromas and San Juan

We are Play it Safe Aromas and San Juan Unified Schools. (A mouthful, I know!) We  are a parent-led effort to replace shredded tires from Aromas-San Juan Unified Public Schools with a non-toxic alternative.

We are a small rural area in California. I know your kids don't go to school here. But even if everyone in town contributed it would be difficult to raise the funds having only 2400 people in Aromas.  That's why we need you. We are asking for funds to finance the removal and replacement of the tire chips with a non-toxic alternative. We set a goal but we are trying to find cheaper bids (goal will be adjusted as we secure them).

This is all about exposure to our children and future health effects like lymphoma. This is about preventing pediatric cancer. We know the EPA had worries about tires piling up in landfills and catching fire.  We know grants were given out to help schools purchase this miracle solution for the EPA's tire waste problem. Ta-Da! Shredded tire mulch for playgrounds everywhere. This is a nationwide problem that has a lot of attention. And for good reason.

We know in 2007, The California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) conducted studies to investigate potential health risks from playground surfaces made from recycled tires. One such study intended to mimic a child's contact with the tire shreds. Five chemicals, including four PAHs, were found on tested samples. One known as "chrysene" was found in higher than acceptable levels set by the OEHHA, and therefore, could increase your risk of  cancer.

In a 2010 meeting convened by the EPA, together with various state and federal agencies, it was concluded that in the case of PAHs,  based on laboratory findings, "breathing PAHs and skin contact seem to be associated with cancer in humans."

And to be honest, when it come to protecting people, the government is almost completely inept.    The Flint Water Crisis is now two years old.  And lead filled water is still flowing through the faucets.   In the movie, Erin Brockovich, PG&E was dumping cancer causing chromium in the Hinkley, California water system.  It took California over a decade after the legal settlements in 1996 to recognize hexavalent chromium-6  as a carcinogen and to actually regulate levels in drinking water.    Too little, too late for those kids in Flint who won't develop properly.  Too little, too late for those people in Hinkley, CA who died because of PG&E.

My point?  The government will not help us. And funds are tight in Sacramento.

Where will your funds go?
100% (except for the fees charged by GoFundMe) will  pay for the removal of the tire shreds and go towards their replacement with a non-toxic alternative (either wood chips or pea gravel). We know funds are tight in your household.  Anything helps, and there is no cause more noble than protecting children.  If we are unable to replace the tire mulch, I will return your donations (minus the 5% GoFundMe charges).

All I'm asking is that you forgo one Starbucks latte, one fast food meal and just donate that money.  I have personally donated 10$ to 20$ to numerous noble GoFundMe campaigns for things like life saving medical treatments. This is a legit site. Please.  We implore you to take this serious.  These tires are the next asbestos. We are just waiting for the governemnt to catch up on the evidence that is already out there. But we cant wait for years upon years for this to happen. We need to act now because its all about how much exposure and for how long.  Thank you!
