Hudson Valley Invasive Plants Guide

Donation protected
What are we doing?  A second printing of our free Plant Don't Plant guide to educate gardeners about choosing between native and invasive plants.

The Plant Don't Plant palm card and corresponding website, PlantDontPlant.org, were created to help gardeners in the Hudson Valley choose native plants for their properties. The guide, which easily fits in a pocket or wallet, provides a quick list of plants to utilize and those to avoid. A longer list can be found online, along with invasive species removal techniques, invasive species spread prevention tips, and much more.

What do we need?
To print more Plant Don't Plant cards!

We made these cards as a public service, and as such, we give them out free of charge (and are happy to do so!). After printing the first batch and sending them to local organizations, we started receiving a large volume of requests for cards from citizens, nurseries, and environmental organizations.

Who are we?
We are students of the Pace University Environmental Policy Clinic who need your help to stop the spread of invasive plants.

Invasive species cause damage worldwide totaling more that $1.4 trillion (that's five percent of the global economy!) Invasive plants can produce significant changes to vegetation, composition, structure, or ecosystem function. In the United States, invasive species have contributed directly to the decline of 42% of the threatened and endangered species. These plants are often poisonous, aggressive offenders disguised as decorative jewels.

Why are they here? People plant them.

Although some plant types come as unintended passengers across seas, they are often planted purposefully by gardeners wishing to adorn their property with exotic beauties. For example the inavsive Asian water chestnut got its start in the Hudson River when it was planted as an ornament in a private pond in the Mohawk Valley. Such plants spread rapidly, sucking resources dry and choking out native species. Not only does this change the natural landscape, but it affects the wildlife who eat the native species.

We would be thrilled to fulfill these requests, expand our reach, give back to our communities and support a sustainable future. Join us!
