PERTH HEALING FOREST
The memorial stands as a permanent symbol of our commitment to Reconciliation with Indigenous people. It recognizes the terrible harm that was done to Indigenous children by Residential schools. All children were punished for speaking their language or for communicating with sisters or brothers. Many were sexually and physically assaulted. More than six thousand children did not make it home to their families.
Residential schools suppressed Indigenous culture, language and spirituality. Cultural genocide went hand in hand with the brutality of neglect, sexual and physical violence.
The Perth Healing Forest Memorial also remembers the missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and Two-Spirit people. For over 40 years the Native Women’s Association of Canada has been working to end the invisibility of violence against Indigenous women and girls which Canadian society has systematically ignored.
Two-spirit people have similarly faced horrendous brutality and with colonialism, the spiritual foundations of two-spirit traditions were driven underground.
The money raised will pay for the installation as well as Anishinaabemowin translation of the interpretive panel. A breakdown of costs is available to any potential donors upon request.
The Perth Healing Forest Committee is an ad hoc committee of people who were moved by the presentation on National Healing Forests in January 2017 and who have been working diligently to develop a permanent memorial. The Town of Perth has graciously given permission for the memorial to be installed on the Wendy Laut Ribbon of Life Path at Last Duel Park.
The fundraising goal is to raise $5000 by the end of October 2018. Thank you for your contribution to this important project.
