The Paupers' Medical Mission (PMM)
December 18-29th, 2016

Hello, and seasons greetings!

I am Zainab Jah - a New York-based actress, having  recently starred on Broadway in "Eclipsed", played Hamlet at The Wilma Theatre, Philadelphia, a writer, and proud daughter of Africa.

The Paupers' Kitchen & Clinic (PKC),  is a community based organization, founded in 1987 by my father, Dr. Sheikh U. M Jah in Bo, Sierra Leone's second largest city. Its mission is to provide hot meals, medical care and educational support for the neediest cases within the community.

After a ten-year civil and rebel led war, followed by devastating Ebola outbreaks, Sierra Leone's health system is at its worst in its history. The UN Development Program Index lists the Republic Of Sierra Leone at 181 out 188 countries.

As a Sierra Leonean,  who spent an idyllic childhood there, these statistics crush me. I grew up fortunate enough to have the health-care facilities and unlimited access to educational resources that post-civil war children of today don't have, even as the country strives for recovery.

As an actor, I have often felt helpless in terms of how I could help make a real change. I felt, 'I'm just an actor, what can I do?' So when I was invited to be a part of this December's medical mission, I was honoured to accept.  Here at last was a concrete, physical way I could help and not merely paying lip-service to causes or signing petitions, but on-the-ground, in-the-bush, hands- on participation.

This December,  along with my husband Timothy Naylor, I will be joining my father, Dr. Jah and  my sister, Dr. Hawanatu Jah, (Obstetrician & Gynaecologist I.B.C.L.C), on the Paupers'Medical Mission.

We will be working alongside doctors and health professionals who have generously donated their time and expertise.

Beyond my presence, I did not want to come empty-handed. I need to bring something to the table. I realized that by galvanizing my  US /UK artist community, colleagues and co-coworkers, WE CAN HELP!
I set up this gofundme campaign in order to give back to the country that formed me and made me the person I am today.
I am seeking to raise funds for:
1) Purchase of drugs: (based on World Health Organization guidlines -  essential supply and drug lists for low resource settings.
2) Medical screenings and surgical operatives.
3) Mosquito nets.
4) School supplies i.e, books, pens, etc.

The most recent visit Paupers' Kitchen participated in to the area ( organized by Ms Josephin e Garnem) in June of this year served over 2000 people, performing over 189 operations in 6 days (see link for full report - SLDMM 2016 report - Jah-2.pdf). We are hoping to serve even more on this trip.

We plan to feed more children, elders and the disabled:

Provide much needed drugs, medical screenings and health education:

School supplies, uniforms, scholarships:

The Medical Team:
Dr. Daniel Youkee, Emergency Medicine Doctor and Clinical Manager of King’s SL Partnership

We hope to raise $10,000 by December 15th, 2016, in time to help purchase the resources to complete our mission.

This campaign is direct funding.
The funds raised will be paid directly to The Paupers' Kitchen and Clinic's private account in Germany, (VR-Bank Kreis Steinfurt eG
Armenküche Bo- Dr. S.U.M Jah)from where medical and school equipment, drug supplies will be attained, with the remainder going to food and school fees, housing and education. This is a community-based organisation. All the doctors, participants and administrative staff volunteer their time, effort and expertise. You can rest assured your donations won't be swallowed up by administrative salaries but instead they go directly to The Paupers' Kitchen and Clinic and put to immediate and effective use. Also, no matter how small  or big your donation, even a dollar goes a very long way in Sierra Leone.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this letter. As you know, word of mouth is powerful, so please, spread the word! Forward it to your friends, colleagues, church groups,  colleges, community centers, yoga studios, gyms, even your book club, essentailly, to everyone you know. Help me help others.
Thank you, with all my heart.
And a merry Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa, to all!!
