ASC Scout / Guide Regatta 2015

Donation protected

I am organising the first Annual Scout /Guide Regatta for 8-18 year olds from the Guiding Erewash and Beeston Divisions and the South West Nottingham and Long Eaton Scouting Groups and the Attenborough Sailing Club Juniors.

The ASC Scout Guide Regatta will be held at Attenborough Sailing Club on Saturday13th June 2015. I am organizing this race to get  kids that are already qualified silors back into sailing and to also get more kids interested in sailing. I want to show that sailing is not the elitist sport that some people believe it is and that it can be enjoyed by all.

Sailing is a great sport that allows individuals to control their own destiny and push their limits as far as they wish. They can strive to be the fastest like Ben Ainslie or have the greatest stamina like Ellen MacArthur or they can just sail for fun.

I am looking to raise money for the regatta and also for future activities that will help more kids become more confident and competent sailors.

Of the funds raised, only a small amount will go towards the costs of running the regatta which will include:

- the running of the safety boats and a small amount on adminstration.

The bulk of the money raised will go towards a long term project to deliver training that will create a pipeline of new sailors with links to scouting and guiding as well as purchasing dinghies that will allow these sailors to progress up through the sailing levels by giving them the equipment they need to do it.

To generate a pipeline of sailors, this funding will be used to purchase:

- Sailing lessons for 20 members of Scouting / Guiding and a 1 year Junior Membership with Attenborough Sailing Club to encourage more scouts and guides to take up sailing. This will be done during the 2015/2016 sailing season

- Two race rigged Laser's or Streaker's dinghies to allow progressive training to the higher sailing levels.

- Equipment that can help kids feel more confident while sailing, such as training manuals, flotation devices and helmets.

The outcomes that I hope to achieve through the regatta and the future are:

- More girls sailing as there is a shortage of female sailors

- More juniors sailing regularly.

- More qualified sailors using their hard earned skills by returning to the water to enjoy the sport of sailing and progress their expertise.

- More Scouts / Guides participating in sailing longterm.

Your support will help attract more kids into a great sport and hopefully someday one of these kids may just make it to the Olympics. If this happens you can feel great that your contribution has made a difference in somebodies life.

The regatta is also being linked with 3 charities. ShelterBox, the Ellen MacArthur Trust and the Eric Twiname Trust. All of the Scouts and Guides from the above mentioned groups are being encouraged to raise money and the troop that raises the most money will win a free afternoon of sailing. This fundraising activity will also provide the kids with a contribution towards some of the badges they strive to earn.
