The Kitchen (and Bathroom) CT9

Since opening on Saturday 16th March we have been blessed and overwhelmed by the warmth and support that the community have shown The Kitchen CT9.

Every day we are now serving, tea, coffee, soups and snacks to members of the community who can pay for their refreshments, some who can pay it forward and to those who, without the generosity of others, would not be able to enjoy the benefits of a community cafe such as ours.

But, and this is the kicker, as many of you know, we are not allowed to use our kitchen to the full because of a condition of planning that requires us to put an odour control system on our new extraction unit and change the direction of the vent

Once this is in place we will be able to take the 2000 kg of of surplus food that we have so far rescued from landfill and create tasty, nutritious and reasonably priced food for all those in our community who need it.

Food being thrown away when others are going to bed at night hungry is a crime

Finally, whilst we are talking about our needs, there is 1 other room that needs attention - the bathroom.

We would like to create a wet-room that would allow those locally with poor facilities to come and have a shower.  Also those who maybe live on the street and have no access to bathing facilities.

We would also like to be able to have a space to offer those with disabilities who may need to been cleaned during the day (to our knowledge this would be the first in Thanet).  For some, this is a real issue and stops them from taking trips out.

So far the support that we have received is helping us to serve and treat with dignity and equality everyone that attends the Kitchen CT9.  These 2 final projects would allow us to completely open and serve our community to our maximum capability.
