WHO
Haitian-Canadian actor and storyteller, Djennie Laguerre and Trinidad-Canadaian actor and director, Rhoma Spencer started the journey of the play Rende-vous with Home at the Summerworks Festival to critical success in 2009 in Toronto. Written and performed by Djennie and Direction and Dramaturgy by Rhoma, the play has since been performed in French as Rendez-vous Lakay. Today it has been selected to represent Canada-Caribbean at the Caribbean Festival of the Arts- CARIFESTA XIII in Barbados from this August 17-27.
WHAT
We are honoured to rep for Canada as this is the first ever diaspora delegation to participate in a CARIFESTA which has been in existence since 1972. It being an intergovernmental event for islands of the Caribbean and Latin America who are members of the Caribbean Common Market- CARICOM. It is especially a fait accompli when Canada, celebrating its 150th aniversary as a nation and the 50th anniversay of Caribana, Caribbean people's gift to Canada on the centennial celebrations in 1967, should be invited to participate in CARIFESTA .
WHY
Presently, we are awaiting grant results from the Canada Council for the Arts which only funds five days of accomodation and meals in addition to our airfare. However, the festival's duration is ten days and we want to experience its full potential by staying the course.
Five days of experience means we would be denying our chances for networking and accessing opportunities for cross cultural exchanges. Not to mention being privy to other countries' theatrical presentations and current trends and practices in Caribbean theatre. These tangibles we could never experience in Canada as theatre artists of caribbean descent.
BECAUSE
Your contribution will help the cast and crew of six persons realize the entire experience of CARIFESTA which was founded on the grounds of being an incubator and crucible for artistic exchanges for Caribbean art and cultural workers. As Canadian-Caribbean artists in the diaspora, we are now invited to sit at this table.
OUR ASK
We need to raise $5,400 to cover the extra six days of accomodation and per diem for six persons.
$150 x 6 x 6 days. We would contribute $400 to the costs and we are asking you to help us raise $5,000 in this campaign.
WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU?
Donations of $50 and above would receive a complimentary ticket to attend our Contingent Performance Showcase in Canada prior to our departure. In addition to an acknowledgement in our production brochure. All other donors' names would be acknowledged in this brochure.
