One Sherpa Home

Donation protected
The One Sherpa Home project seeks to rebuild one home destroyed in the earth quake of April 25, 2015. This home is in the village of Phortse, where most of the Mt Everest climbing Sherpas come from. It is a three room structure belonging to Mingma Chhring Sherpa and is home to his wife, two sons, two sisters, his mother, and another sherpa woman they have taken in. Our design reflects traditional homes built in the region while making small improvements in the daily lives of its inhabitants.

The construction will consist of earth-filled rice sacks, local timbers, and metal roofing. This method provides enough flexibility to withstand the earth quakes common to the Himalayas while also offering remarkable heat retention, a must during the bitter winters at the 13,000 foot elevation where Phortse is located. As well, this is a very inexpensive means of construction that can be easily replicated. In the course of building this home we will hire local sherpas to help while they are also being trained in this method of construction. When the model is complete we will leave all tools behind so they can rebuild their own homes in the same fashion.

All One Sherpa Home personnel will work as unpaid volunteers, paying their own way to and from Nepal. Every dime of funds donated will go to the construction of this home.
