Community Radio Youghal has been broadcasting to East Cork and West Waterford since 1979. The station provides an invaluable service to the community and has been able to keep our doors open due to the extraordinary support and generosity of the people of East Cork and West Waterford.
Fundraising is key for the station and our Radiothon and Spinathon, which takes places on 16th and 17th August 2019, is one of our flagship events.
For the last couple of years, one man has shown incredible generosity in both his time and effort in helping us with this fundraiser - Ollie McCarthy.
Each year he takes it upon himself to cycle an incredible distance, while the Spinathon is on, to collect a novelty item and bring it back.
Last year he cycled to Cork, to pick up a Big Mac and cycled back to Youghal - a distance of 100km!!!!
This year he has taken upon himself, an even bigger challenge.
Starting on North Main St Youghal, he will leave at 8am on Saturday 17th August, cycle up the infamous Windmill hill, which broke even the best of the Ironmen and women in June.
He will then carry on to the Atlantic Steps by Clancy's, pick the bike up on his shoulders and walk down to the tide, where he will dive in and, in an homage to Ironmen and Ironwomen, emerge soaking wet.
He will then hop on his bike and cycle 50km towards Waterford, pick up something in a shop (with a receipt for proof!!) and cycle the 50km back - another incredible 100km!!!
We want to support Ollie all we can and would love to raise €1000 , for his amazingly kind gesture.
Ollie is an incredibly humble guy, and does this challenge, not for recognition but for his love of the community of Youghal and its radio station.
