Peacebus Mission to Darwin 2012
This is an appeal for cash support to get the colourful campaigning Peacebus.com to Darwin to do some grass roots resistance organising to the newly established US Marine base there.
For the Gillard government to invite the US Marines to base themselves in Darwin, to be in joint command of Australian troops there and to prepare there for war with China is a deep offense to the Australian sense of sovereignty and independence, an awful compromise of national security.
This is NOT the will of the people. To the contrary it demonstrates the Gillard government to be more loyal to the US Embassy than it is to the Australian people. Puppets!
A sustained grass roots campaign to shut the base down will bring on big changes. Another nail in the coffin of the ALP. And maybe the beginning of the end of the US/Australia Alliance.
This out of despair. No illusions about the magnitude of the task. After all it took the Japanese 25 years to eject the US military for Okinawa.
But the journey of a thousand miles begins with just one step. May an early step be a popularly supported Peacebus Mission to Darwin this June - July.
The aim is to travel to Darwin in a very public way - mural on Peacebus and actions along the way to get noticed. For example i propose to launch the mission before the end of May at a Speak Out outside Lavarack Barracks in the garrison town of Townsville and publicly call for the support of servicing soldiers for the campaign to shut the US base.
And when in Darwin, i will seek support from the Larrakia people and from concerned Darwin residents, union activists and others to organise a campaign which occupies public space and is visible and vocal in calling for the Marines to be deported and the US military banished from this land.
"Shut the Darwin US Marine Base. No more US wars!" will be the slogan.
This as a service for peace.
Peace in the Pacific.
Peace in our times.
Peace for future generations.
You are the gold at the end of the rainbow!
Fantastic Mission graeme.
Absolutely agree, Kd. How appalling that Obama should address our parliament, as he did last November, and use it as a forum for talking up war with our major trading partner. How more appalling that PM Gillard should be thrilled and fawning about this. Where will change come from. Not the war parties in parliament, they too deep in the pockets of the US Embassy. Only from extra parliamentary opposition, from the people, for the people.
The predominant issue here i think is Australia's dependence on China economically, while holding onto a military alliance with US designed to defend against Chinese imperialism. Truth is if BHP goes bust due to loss of the Chinese export market, Aussie economy will be finished. As well as all these families Gillard professes to support against energy price hikes from the Carbon Tax, probably have their Super Fund predominantly invested in BHP, Rio and other large mining companies. The Marine Military base in Darwin is the biggest affront to China we could possibly make, and will ijeopardise the very trade agreeements we need the most.
