Nursing in the Philippines

Donation protected
Hello! I'm Amy Smith, a second year Mental Health Nursing student at the University of Huddersfield.

Since I found out it was possible, I have wanted to go on an elective placement in a developing country. I will be travelling to Dumaguete in the Philippenes on July 28th 2017 to spend 4 weeks on a psychiatric ward and one week staying with a family in a rural village where resources are limited and beliefs surrounding mental health differ from our own.

I will be immersing myself in the local culture and will get the chance to encounter a range of new experiences that I would never be able to have at home, including visiting a witch doctor and seeing people who come to hospital as a last resort due to extreme financial difficulty.

The money I raise will be spent on funding my travel expenses which are very costly, especially for a student already on a tight budget! I also want to be able to give back to the local community and provide the children with books and toys, and the hospitals with some basic equipment that they severly lack in like antiseptic wipes and hand wash.

I am so passionate about mental health nursing and this placement will be a once in a lifetime experience to learn from a new culture and come home with a huge appreciation for the healthcare we have here in the UK.

Any donations no matter how big or small will be massively appreciated!

Thank you! xxx
