Hi! My name is Noura :) I'm a poet and teaching artist based in Philly. I teach poetry workshops in Philly public schools and coach a team of high school-aged slam poets. I write about diaspora magic and black boi joy and arab boi resilience and radical queer love and survival. Recently, I found out that I was fortunate enough to get into Callaloo, a retreat specifically for Black writers. (more info at http://callaloo.tamu.edu/node/243.html)
I've been fortunate enough to participate in two writer's retreats in the past, and each has played a crucial role in shaping my writing. I learned and honed important craft strategies and developed my writing skills. More importantly, I developed a relationship to my body of work. I learned to be intentional with my voice and message when I create, and to treat poetry as a living craft. I found family in others who shared this reverence for the language we are all learning to use.
I hope to continue this growth at Callaloo in June, but the costs associated with the retreat are proving to be prohibitive. I've broken down the expenses:
DUE 3/15: Registration = $400
BY MID-APRIL: 2 weeks' Lodging in a shared Airbnb = $300
Airfare to North Carolina = $300
If there is extra money for any reason, it'll go towards food or the books I'll need to prepare for the workshops.
