No Thanks, No Fish Tanks for ME! is a campaign launched by Local Citizens for SMART Growth (LCSG), a group formed in response to the possibility of a massive industrial salmon farm being built by Nordic Aquafarms, a foreign corporation, on 40 acres of previously pristine green recreational space bordering the Little River and Reservoir in Belfast, Maine. Belfast is a rural community of 6,300 residents, with an eclectic and entrepreneurial identity as an environmentally aware, socially conscious place to visit and live.
Nordic Aquafarms intends to grow 25,000-33,000 tons of salmon every year, requiring the extraction of hundreds of millions of gallons of fresh water from deep wells, the withdrawal of similar volumes of salt water from Penobscot Bay, and the discharge of more than 500 million pounds of nitrogen-rich effluent into Penobscot Bay annually.
This fast moving industrial development has raised many questions and caused great concern among residents, which seems to have fallen on the deaf ears of our city officials. LCSG believes that "government by the people, for the people, is characterized by transparency, accountability, participation and inclusion."
In the absence of the ability to exercise these fundamental rights, this campaign has been started by two individuals who are abutters to the property where the farm is proposed to be located. Donna and Ellie, with the support of Local Citizens for SMART Growth, have brought suit against the City of Belfast for failure of legal process.
Donna and Ellie are central in the work to educate the public and fight to keep the Salmon Farm out. The lawsuit is proceeding, and the fund is helping to pay legal expenses. Local Citizens receives bi-weekly reports about income and expenses that are moving through the campaign account.
